Highlight Reel February 19th-25th, 2011 February 27, 2011

Saturday-  Zach drove us to town where we spent the morning grocery shopping for the week, stopping at the library, the bank, and the hair salon.  Errands done- we headed for home so Zach could be picked up for a babysitting job.  Tyler had a guy come out after he got off work and he traded his motorcycle for a 4 wheeler.

Sunday- Lazy Sunday at home (LOVE Sundays!)  I finished reading my book club book Olive Kitteridge (don’t waste your time) and Zach and I played several rounds of runny which he won all but one.

Monday- Our Boy Scout troop held their Pinewood Derby tonight.  I was so proud of my son.  He didn’t win a trophy- but he did spend almost the entire hour of prep time before the race to help another boy modify his car so he had a better chance of winning.  When I asked him if he was going to have time to work on his own car he said “I already have a 1st and 3rd place trophy.  Andrew hasn’t won yet.”  What a good kid he is!

Tuesday-  Bonus book club tonight!  We met tonight to specifically review a book and make foods that related to the book.  The book was terrible- the foods were oh so yummy!  Later I almost lost that yummy food when Zach ended up throwing up all over.  I really thought I was going to join him with my head in the toilet bowl!  Nasty!

Wednesday-  I kept Zach home from school since he was up half the night throwing up.  It was Jeff’s day off so he was able to stay with him.  By the time I got home Zach was feeling better but still wasn’t ready to eat supper.  We ended up watching the A-Team to round out the evening.

Thursday- Last night of Bible Study for the year.  We welcomed a new person who just might join us next year, and we had the traditional cheesecake.

Friday-  Monica & Gracie came to visit and joined us for Rosemary Chicken and Roasted Red Potatoes with Cherry Cobbler and ice cream for dessert.  We played a few games and had a nice evening.

Bonus Book Club February 23, 2011

Last night we had a bonus book club meeting.  We usually meet once a month but we had an opportunity to be featured in a book by author Judy Gelman on book clubs and what they bring to eat that relates to the books they review.  The book we chose to review last night was Olive Kitteridge.  There were many different foods mentioned throughout the book so we had plenty of dishes to choose from.  Sheila made Beef Stew (which was awesome!) and bread warm from the oven.  Sharon brought crab stuffed mushrooms, Susan brought red wine, donut holes, olive cheese balls and carrot soup and I added meatballs and vanilla ice cream with butterscotch sauce.

I do have to say the book was awful and reading it was a chore, but the book reviews we have always make up for that.  I love discussing and sharing ideas with the others in our club.  They can make me see a book in a whole new light.  Often I’ll leave liking the book a little bit better than I initially did.  Unfortunately that was not the case with this one!  :0)

To see the rest of the foods (with recipes!) click here to visit Sheila’s blog Book Journey.

Project 52 Week 4 February 21, 2011

One more thing crossed off this week!

1.  Try 1 new main dish recipe a month.  (I used to be good at this, but as I get busier I get less creative)

2.  Try 1 new dessert a month.  (My guys are always complaining I don’t bake enough)  In February I made a no bake cereal bar recipe with the Multigrain Cheerios I have boxes of in my pantry.  (and yes- it has peanut butter in it!)

3.  Make a crockpot meal once a week (It’s such a timesaver!)   For week 4 I made Cheesy Crockpot Meatloaf

4.  Stick to my weekly grocery budget (I’m trying the new cash envelope system for this)   Grand total for this weeks groceries= $35.84 for 8 meals!

5.  Add to my savings monthly  -Lately I’ve been subtracting

6.  Pay off all hospital/doctor bills by April 1st    This goal might not happen.  When I set this date I forgot about Zach’s physical therapy bill which was about twice as much money as I thought it would be.  I did, however, pay off 3 off them so far this month and I feel great about that!

7.  Take an outdoor walk weekly (Even in this cold Minnesota weather)

8.  Do the 50 mile bike ride with Zach

9.  Do a girl’s camping trip or weekend with Janeen.  (We’ve been planning this for years and never do it)

10.  Take mom out for margaritas.  (Can you say “happy hour”, mom?)

11.  Host a Bunco night

12.  Wash the outside of my house  (It’s awful, it really is)

13.  Lose 20 pounds  (yes I know I need to lose 4x that amount but these goals are supposed to be attainable, remember?)  Down 4 pounds this week due to teeth problems last week that prevented me from eating much, but hey, I’ll take it any way I can get it!

14.  Go ice fishing with my hubby (He likes to fish- I don’t.  and I HATE the cold!)

15.  Shoot bow with my hubby  (He really wants me to do this so I will)

16.  Do 1 date night a month with my hubby.  (I’m hearing all the time on Facebook how all my friends have such a good time on their weekly date nights.  I’m so jealous!)          We went out for supper to Poncho & Lefty’s in January.

17.  Read 100 books.  (Last year I read 86 I KNOW I can hit 100 this year)    Book 6/100 finished.  This week I finished The Recipe Club and Olive Kitteridge

18.  Do an independent Bible study.  (I love the one I facilitate yearly and I have no more time left in my schedule to join another one so I think an independent study might well be the answer)  I bought The Life of Christ by Fulton Sheen.  Don’t know when I’ll start it yet though.

19.  Read 1 inspirational book a month.  Just started Left To Tell about funding God during the Rwandan Holocaust.

20.  Pull 1 book a month off my personal bookshelf and place it in my TBR pile.  (I have a lot of books I’ve purchased because I sincerely want to read them, so why do I keep checking out stacks from the library?)  For February I dusted off Eye Contact by Cammie McGovern.  I don’t know how long it’s been on my bookshelf but it’s off now!

21.  Go through clothes in closet and give to charity.  (I’m not a clothes horse but I have run out of room)

22.  Blog on book blog once a week.  (I enjoyed book blogging but I quit when life got crazy and I just haven’t gotten back to it)    Posted my Sunday Confessional on http://bybookorbycrook.blogspot.com.  Also did the Saturday Snapshot and have scheduled The Recipe Club review for Wednesday.

23.  Plan at least 2 meals a week from my pantry.  (I get such great coupon deals and I have been stockpiling.  Now I have to use it!)   Plans in place for next week are: Chili and Mafalda

24.  Add $5.00 to my Christmas fund weekly  (doesn’t sound like much but it will add up, trust me)

25.  Find new website for Boy Scouts (the one I have been using now wants to charge us so I’m shopping for a new free one)  Decided to start a blog instead.

26.  Update the new website for Boy Scouts once a week during school year  Updated with last meetings Calendar of Events

27.  Paint my living room  (I’m afraid of color.  I like open, clean white but I’m ready to stretch)

28.  Redo wiring/cabling on my TV/home theater/ DVD recorder/satellite.

29.  Install new garbage can roller system under sink

30.  Fill in potholes in driveway (it’s like riding a bucking bronco all the way up to my garage)

31.  Go to 3 movies at theater this year.  (we never go, it’s pitiful)

32.  Get flower beds cleaned out by June 1st  (last year I think I got to them sometime around the 4th of July!)

33.  Get flag back up on flagpole.  (pulley system broke- I miss it)

34.  Get back to weekly training topic at work.    Very bust trying to get caught up with fiscal year budgeting and SWAS plans and plum forgot to do this this week!

35.  Hold 2 training meetings at work this year

36.  Go on 1 pilgrimage with my church  (I’ve missed some good ones due to expense or having to take time off from work.  One of the day trip pilgrimages would be fun.  Walmart will not close down if I ask for the day off!)

37.  Have Janeen and Al over for a card night.

38.  Have Janeen and Al over for a BBQ

39.  Treat mom & dad to a Dutch Oven meal.

40.  Hold a coupon class for the Janeen, Lori & Janelle (they’ve been begging!)

41.  Bring treats to work for the holidays to thank my associates and show them they are appreciated (I’m thinking Valentines, St Patricks Day, Easter, Independence Day, Halloween, Thanksgiving, & Christmas.  I used to do this several years ago)    Made gourmet pretzels for Valentines Day.  Drizzled them in pink & white.  (Terri missed out on them at Christmas time)

42.  Visit Papa twice a  week.

43.  Get Kevin started on religious emblem.  We finally decided to start on the Ad Altare Dei instead of the Pope Pius book so as soon as I can pick up the workbooks we will be on our way.

44.  Do the Safety merit badge with our patrol.

45.  Get Christmas shopping done early.  Done by December 1st.  (I hated all the last minute scrambling this year.  So stressful!)

46.  Do 1 freezer meal a month.  (It doesn’t take any longer to double a meal and freeze one for later)

47.  Keep up with the Motivated Mom’s chore list.  (It’s been helping me break down my duties so housework doesn’t seem so overwhelming)

48.  Donate to one new charity this year.  Donated my weekly lunch budget to Feed the Poor.  I fed 420 children and it felt great!

49.  Participate in the March of Dimes Walkathon (I have only missed 1 in the last 21 years!)

50.  Have 3 Tyler days this year  (a day with just my firstborn.  I never get to spend time with him)

51.  Have 3 Zach days this year  (can’t leave out my youngest)

52.  Have a Pamper Me day  (I need a day for just me.  Just one.  That’s all I ask!)

Highlight Reel February 12th-18th, 2011 February 19, 2011

Saturday-  Zach and I went to visit Papa & Mom today.  We were there for about 2 hours and Papa didn’t wake up the whole time!  Not long before we left Dad also showed up for a visit.  Zach and I went out for a late lunch at China Garden and picked up groceries before heading for home.  Now I’m watching the Wild game which currently is looking to be just as intense as the one last night.  We’re playing the same team and they are definitely not happy about our win last night!

Sunday-Church, then a quiet day at home.  I was a bit under the weather so I took it easy.  I made Jeff’s favorite Mommy McBiscuits for breakfast and put Tex Mex Stuffed Peppers in the crockpot for supper.  We watched a movie- Faith Like Potatoes which I was reviewing for my church.  A good portion of the movie was subtitled so it’s not one I’d recommend for the family.  Zach helped me make pretzel treats for my associates for Valentines Day.

Monday-  Valentines Day was kind of a bust today.  Jeff did buy me a beautiful rose bouquet, but I ended up getting off work 2 hours late so that kind of put the kibosh on all the extras I had planned for our special meal.  We did enjoy Steaks with Parmesan Crab Sauce, Crab Legs with melted butter, Baked Potatoes, but I didn’t have enough time to throw together the Jello Jiggler Hearts or a fancy shmancy dessert.

Tuesday- Happy Birthday to my Mom!  We went to Mom & Dad’s and played 2 games of 35.  Jeff won the first and Dad & Zach tied on the second.  They were just going to split the pot but my youngest is quite the high stakes gambler so they decided to cut the deck for it and Zach walked away with it all!  We always end the evening with Pass the Ace and Zach’s pocket was really jingly with coins when we were done.  After I served the cake and ice cream we headed for home.

Wednesday-Happy Birthday to my beautiful niece Amanda who turns 17 today!

Thursday-I’m so ready for the weekend.  Today was my third day of dealing with a contract customer that T-Mobile screwed up and she was NOT happy.  I’m just the liaison and I can’t do anything about getting her number ported over faster, but I seem to be getting the brunt of her rage.  I understand her anger & frustration, but I’m getting tired of being screamed at!  I have spent 5 hours in the last 3 days on the phone with T-Mobile because of their screw up.  5 HOURS!  Okay…I’m done with my rant. 🙂

Friday-  Was hoping for a relaxing evening at home and then remembered we had moonlight bowling with our Boy Scout Patrol at 10pm.  I always grumble about how I’m too old for things like this, but I always have a great time.  One of the other leaders attending was texting me some smack talk about how I better bring my A game and how he was on a professional bowling team so it gave me great pleasure to whip his butt the first 2 games.  We ended up bowling 7 games because we were tied for wins and he did end up the victor but I put up a good fight.  The last game we bowled I didn’t even break 100, my arm was just shot!

I feel good about this week even though I didn’t get much crossed off!

4.  Stick to my weekly grocery budget (I’m trying the new cash envelope system for this)   Whoops! Went over budget this week spending $112. But, I knew I was going to because I was buying for our Valentines Day meal which is a splurge.  The crab legs alone cost $30 out of my $100 budget.  I don’t feel too guilty about this though since I only spent $68 last week.

Highlight Reel February 5th-11th, 2011 February 12, 2011

Saturday-  Spent the morning in tears because my jaw hurt so bad.  Hopefully the antibiotics will help soon.  The evening went a little better and I took advantage of it to go into town and pick up food for the Superbowl party tomorrow.

Sunday-  Went to Trinity Lutheran Church this morning to help the Boy Scouts prepare pancakes to thank the congregation for sponsoring Troop 43 for the last 27 years.  Near 5pm Dad joined us to watch the Superbowl and enjoy the food Zach and I prepared.

Monday- Boy Scouts tonight went to the city council meeting as part of their Citizenship in the Community Merit Badge.  Instead of sitting in on it I went over and spent some time at Papa’s house with Mom.

Tuesday-  On the way to Book Club tonight I got lost.  I thought I knew where Kaydi’s house was, but I guess I didn’t.  I picked up the cell phone to call my friend Lori who I knew was already there and when I looked in my rear view mirror I saw flashing lights in my rear view window!  The police officer asked me if I knew why she pulled me over and I honestly had no idea.  I was lost at the time trying to look at street signs so I knew I wasn’t speeding.  It turns out not only was my passenger brake light out, but my tabs said 2010 on them.  It turns out someone had tried to steal them because the officer could see where it was curled up at the end where someone had picked at it.  Luckily, they hadn’t stolen the one off the front plate!  Replacement tabs=$9.00.  When I finally got to book club we had an awesome discussion on a so-so book.

Wednesday- Had my Year End safety Meeting today at the Hawthorne Inn.  It went really good I think.  Jeff and I had Zach’s annual IEP meeting at his school.  He’s doing great and his Tourette’s have not been a problem at all this year, but Jeff thinks he should get in trouble more often because his case manager is “hot”.

Thursday-  I turned myself in to jail today. No…not because I got pulled over the other night!  I was jailed for “good” in the Jail and Bail to support the Muscular Dystrophy Association.  I was supposed to raise $1000 in the hour I was there.  I didn’t even come close!  We canceled Bible Study tonight because Caroline is in Texas, Henry is on his way there, Cheryl got called to D.C. on business for the week and that would have left just Carrie and I.

Friday-  The Wild game tonight was way to intense!  I had to suffer through 9 frames in the shootout before we finally got the win.  My stomach was in knots!
