Saturday-  Zach and I took the day and bummed around a little bit.  We went to the new Catholic book and gift store downtown.  It’s a very nice store and I’m glad we have one back in the community.  We also went over to the Bead Box bead store looking for some kind of bead we could put on braided hemp necklaces for our Boy Scout Patrol.  Zachary had never been there and was absolutely fascinated by all the thousands and thousands of different beads they had.  He loved the carved bone and polished rock beads the best.  Then we headed to Home Depot to pick up some landscaping rock to build a fire pit off to the side of our yard by the pines.  We christened it that evening by roasting wieners and marshmallows.

Sunday- received a call at 7:41 am that Nana had passed away an hour ago.  After breaking the news to my children I went to town to get groceries so I could put a few meals together for Papa, mom, my aunt Bonnie & my aunt Candy.  I figured they would be far too busy for the next couple of days to worry about cooking.  By the time I got home with the groceries my cousin Janeen had stopped by with a huge pan of lasagna and a cake.  After putting together a big crock pot of stew I went in to spend some time with my family.

Monday- went to work and after school picked Zach up from school so he could serve supper at the senior center and then we headed to scouts for our first meeting of the school year.

Tuesday-  Zach had physical therapy after school and I skipped out of book club.  I just didn’t feel like going.  We ended up at Mom’s where the family had gathered to eat the lasagna Janeen had dropped by.  It was yummy!

Wednesday-  Nana’s wake was today at Nelson Doran.  I had so many of my friends and coworkers show up.  It was really nice of everyone to stop by.

Thursday- a very difficult day.  Nana’s funeral was at 10am.  I really enjoyed seeing some of the relatives I don’t normally see, I just would rather it had been at a family reunion.  I came home with a backache and splitting headache so I laid down for a nap.  After supper I went to my first Bible study class that I am leading again this week.

Friday- Had the day off so Tyler and I went for lunch.  I did some shopping, Jeff & I went out for pizza,  and Zach went to the football game and spent the night with a friend.

Nana Will Be Missed September 12, 2010

My grandma passed away this morning.  We knew for quite some time that things weren’t going well.  But that doesn’t make it much easier.  I thought I was prepared for her passing, but the phone call this morning was still like a punch in the gut.  I am thankful that I had the opportunity to spend these last months and weeks with her, visiting her often, and when I could, helping with her care.

She gave me a precious gift the last night I was with her.  She told me she loved me.  I loved her too.  Goodbye Nana.

Zach’s First Day of School

Zach started 1oth grade!  Unfortunately it was not the traditional first day of school in our family like we normally have it.  Traditionally I get a picture of my kids getting off the bus on their first day of school as well as their morning mug shot.  But because Zach had a doctor’s appointment right after school I picked him up instead of riding the bus home.

Also, the traditional first day of school meal is mom’s homemade chicken noodle soup.  Mom has been staying in with my grandma since she has taken a turn for the worse so we didn’t have that either.  Oh well, there’s always next year.  Anyway- here’s the morning mug shot!

Labor Day Weekend Backyard Campout

Last Friday night we headed over to Zach’s assistant Scoutmaster’s home for a backyard campout.  We got there about 6:30pm and set up my tent.  Zach was sleeping inside on the hide-a-bed since getting up off the ground was still a little tricky on his knee.  That evening the boys played catch for a while and we all sat around the campfire.  The boys even roasted marshmallows.

Around 11pm I headed for the tent.  I had set aside an extra blanket at home to cover up with and completely forgot to bring it so I borrowed one from Mark.  I had dressed in jeans, two pairs of socks, a shirt, sweatshirt and fleece jacket but even with an extra blanket on top of my sleeping bag I was still cold as the temperature dipped to 40 degrees.  I guess my body has not gotten acclimated to the cooler fall temperatures yet.

The next morning we had pancakes and bacon for breakfast and sat around the campfire trying to warm up.  The boys played around a little with the air soft guns and after some time on the trampoline and lunch of brats, beans & chips we headed to the Gull Lake Dam for a little fishing.  Nothing seemed to be biting so the boys had time to put together a nice wildflower bouquet for me.

For supper that night we had a feast.  Alvin had brought some smoked hams and I made scalloped potatoes with cheese in the dutch oven.  We had corn on the cob and apple cobbler in the dutch oven.  It was all fantastic!  We spent the evening around the campfire again and the marshmallows once again made the rounds.

Having smartened up and put on some long johns and grabbed one more blanket I slept a lot better Saturday night until a fire truck went screaming by.  As I was peeling myself off the tent ceiling, I tried to listen to the neighbors talking out by the road.  It seems there was a fire at the campground just down the road.  After taking a trip to the bathroom I settled back to sleep for the night.

In the morning it was a breakfast of scrambled eggs with cheese and fried Spam which helped sustain us until we could tear down camp and head home.  Thanks Mark & Kris for having us at your home & hosting the backyard campout.  And a special thanks to Alvin for providing all the great food!

Zach’s Surgery

This is Zach’s presurgery face the night before in the hotel.

 We had matching wristbands.

His knee just 3 days later.  The initials on his knee are those of his doctor.
