Coupon-a-holic! August 30, 2010

Okay, I will admit, I have used coupons in the past but I wasn’t real vigilant about looking for them.  While stumbling around You Tube one day I found this video about a woman who uses coupons and feeds her family for pennies a day.  That intrigued me enough to look around on the website for tips on how to fit couponing into my life.  I started reading couponing blogs and the first week I picked up some pretty good deals.  The second week I scored some free items and I have been hooked ever since.  I have been doing this a little less than a month and I am looking at transforming one of my closets into a pantry to hold all the food and misc. items I was able to get for free or a little bit of nothing.  Let me give you a few examples:

The other day I went to Target and purchased 8 Chef Boyardee Raviolios, 2 Hunts Snack Pack Puddings, and 2 Sharpie highlighters and I paid the grand total of 58¢!  How did I do it?  Easy!

On Target’s website they had a $1.00 off coupon for Chef Boyardee.  Target has them price cut to 87¢.  Each one was FREE!

I had a manufacturer’s coupon from a savings book in a local supermarket for a free Snack Pack when you purchase 4 Chef Boyardee.  Voila!  FREE

I had a Target website coupon for $1.00 off any 2 Sharpie highlighters.  I purchased 2 that were price cut to 75¢ each.  And there is where my 58¢ total came in.

I have also found really good deals at Walgreens too.  I have stacked manufacturer’s coupons with Walgreens coupons and got items for free which is what I recently did to get 4 bottles of Listerine free, 4 automatic spray air fresheners for free as well as deodorants, shampoos and body washes.

Last night Zach was goofing around with my cans of Chef Boyardee Raviolios and counting them as he built them into a pyramid.  How many was I able to accumulate in a week and a half with my Target coupons?  40!  Enough to last me an entire year!  All of a sudden Jeff doesn’t complain about my shopping.  In fact he asks me every time I come in with 2 or 3 shopping bags what I was able to get today for a little bit of nothing.

Using coupons has cut my grocery bill in the last few weeks anywhere from 50-75%.  I’m telling you- “You gotta try this yourself!”

**Sorry, the Target coupon expired 8/28!**

Saturday- Zach in a lot of pain.  I feel so bad for him!

Sunday- Zach doing better today.  Lori and Aiden came to visit and give Zach treats.  That was really nice!  Jeff stayed home with him while I went in to visit Nana.

Monday- Zach got out of the house today.  He was going stir crazy!  We went and visited Papa & Nana, stopped at Target and came home. Janeen visited for about an hour with us.  We had Dad over for turkey, stuffing, potatoes & gravy and he contributed veggies from the garden.

Tuesday-  Zach and I took a drive to Little Falls today to get him out of the house.  He can’t stand on his leg for long or walk around much but he likes getting out.  Monica & Gracie came over to visit with us and they stayed for supper.

Wednesday-  Jeff’s day off and he spent some time trying to fix the mower and the skylight in the bathroom that has decided it wants to start leaking when it rains.  I went in to pick up a few groceries and popped in to see Nana but she was sleeping again.  Dad’s coming over for supper.  I’m grilling steak and we’re having stuffed potatoes, salad and sugar free banana cream pie.

Thursday- Janeen had the day off so Zach went with us out for lunch to China Buffet.  Then she came back to our house and we played cards on the patio for a while.

Friday- Zach and I went out for lunch and drove to Nisswa for an ice cream cone.  We also stopped in and visited Nana for a while. It was a beautiful day and very windy.  After playing cards on the patio with Janeen yesterday I forgot to close the unmbrella on the patio and the wind took it and my table and they flew across the patio and the umbrella broke!

Saturday- Rummage sales around the lake.  Got there at 7:15 to help open and we had customers 5 minutes later for the sale that started at 8am.  We were pretty busy all day.  I left once to get lunch going and mom left once to eat, otherwise we both stayed busy with customers.  All total we pulled in about $530.00.  Not bad!

Sunday-we spent a family day together not doing a whole lot of anything but it was nice.

Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday- Nothing going on.

Thursday- left for the cities to check into the hotel.  I got us lost which took us an extra 1 1/2 hours on the road.  I hate driving in the cities when I don’t know where I’m going.  I got us to the hospital no problem but the directions the hotel gave us sucked and that’s when I got lost.  When we finally got to the hotel to check in we were tired, crabby and HUNGRY!  We checked in, ate supper, then mom relaxed in the room while Zach and I went to the pool.

Friday-  Got up at 5:30 to get to the hospital.  The nurses at Fairview hospital were awesome!  The surgery went great.  Zach was in for about an hour and a half and then in the recovery room for an hour and then they let us go!  Aside from stopping twice to eat (!) we were home by about 4:30.

Admittedly I am a little late in writing this highlight reel so I can’t even remember what happened this week!  I promise to get better at this, but this is what I did remember.

A couple of nights I went over to mom & dad’s to help get readi for the garage sale and mom opened that up Thursday.

Zach and I went school shopping for clothes.  Having non-fussy is awesome!  We started at JCPenney and then went to Kohls.  He had 5 pairs of pants and 5 shirts picked out in less than an hour and a half and with all the discounts I got at both retailers the damage was only $160.00!

And then there was my bargain shopping adventures.  I have been reading up on couponing and baragain hunting and have learned so much in the last week.  I had decided to put what I learned to the test thinking I would get deals but nothing like it said I would online.  After all, Brainerd is not some booming metropolis in a highly competitive market.  Well suffice it to say, I bought a bunch of loot and saved a ton of money.  At the end of the week I figured I had purchased about $130.00 worth of merchandise for $12.64!  I will post more on this later because I would love to share a few tips with you!

Saturday- Waited all morning for the refrigerator repairman to show up.  Went to a surprise 5oth birthday party for our friend Dave and then took the boat out.  Zach went swimming and Jeff and I went fishing.

Sunday-  Zach packed up and we brought him out to Boy Scout camp.  Will pick him up next Saturday.

Monday- Had a census meeting at the church tonight and then I went to Mom’s to help price Nana’s stuff for the garage sale.

Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday- eerily quiet with Zach away at camp

Friday- Drove to Crosslake where Tyler and I spent the night at a hotel so I could be at camp at 7am to pick Zach up.  Tyler and I had pizza, swam in the pool & sat in the hot tub.  Then I went to the camp for Zach’s award ceremony and when I got back to the hotel I set some munchies out and Tyler & I watched a horror flick.  It was a fun night with my oldest little man.
